Matt

Bassist & Mellotronnier, grounding the band with intuitive grooves and ethereal textures.

The Enigmatic Foundation

Matt, the Bassist and Mellotronnier of Jellytoes, is a musical enigma. With no formal training and a self-taught approach, his bass lines are simple yet essential, grounding the band's more complex soundscapes with an intuitive feel that can't be taught.

His inspiration comes from the strangest corners of the world—the sound of rocks resting by the seaside, the rhythmic cadence of polo ponies, and deep dives into the biographies of statesmen like François Mitterrand and Philip Habib.

"Sometimes the notes you don't play are more important than the ones you do. In fact, the fewer notes I play, the better our songs sound."

Somehow, despite all odds, he found himself in the band, leaving everyone wondering, "How the heck did this guy get in here?" But whether he's laying down a steady groove or weaving ethereal Mellotron textures into the mix, Matt remains a crucial part of the Jellytoes sound—whether anyone can explain why or not.

When not performing, Matt can be found in second-hand bookshops hunting for obscure political memoirs or wandering beaches with a field recorder, capturing the sounds that inspire his unique approach to music.
